Session 1: Spark your creativity – how to shape your service research
Speaker 1: Shashi Matta, Katholische Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Germany

Service research comes in all shapes and forms, there is no “pre-set formula”. It is an interdisciplinary field of research, uses a variety of methods and researchers get inspired in many different ways! This session will help you to spark your own creativity by learning how other researchers look at the world. Shashi Matta is not only a professor in Innovation & Creativity, he is also a certified instructor of the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® Method. He will kick off our DC with some serious play to spark your creativity!
Sabine Benoit has build an impressive career bridging theory and practice. Her research is inspired by interesting real-life problems and in her research, she does not only get inspired by practice, she also shares her insights and disseminates knowledge beyond publishing in academic journals in many novel and creative ways. She will challenge you to think differently about how to innovate in your own research.
Session 2: The research journey – sharing experiences

The research journey is exciting and challenging at the same time. Behind every great paper there is a story, and often, the journey was a bumpy road. Chiara Orsingher and Dwayne Gremler will share their personal journeys as authors with you, illustrating that as the saying goes, “perseverance precedes success, even in the dictionary”.
Session 3: the eye of the beholder – the review process

This session will give you a sneak preview into the world of reviewers to understand their perspective, how you can preempt any major issues that prevent you from publishing your work and how to deal with the review process along the way.
Session 4: The exciting future of education

Speaker 3: Jochen Wirtz, National University of Singapore, Singapore
If you aspire to become a professor, research and education go hand in hand. The world of education is going through some exciting transformation, which we will highlight a few of during this session. Mirella Kleijnen will take you along on the Student Journey through the world of learning analytics. In a world where blended learning is becoming the norm, data-driven insights in the student journey can help us shape learning experiences in a more effective way. Additionally, new technology also compliment the traditional classroom, as Gaby Odekerken-Schröder will illustrate with the use of robotics in the class room. Finally, Jochen Wirtz will shed more light on Live Long Learning. With changing education, more flexibility and an aging population that changes jobs more frequently than ever, learning continues through life.
Session 5: Being a researcher and having a life too
Speaker: Michael Brady, Florida State University, USA
Being an academic must sound exhausting by now! And yet, there is more to life than just work, also for academics. Especially in times where people’s wellbeing has frequently been challenged, finding the right work-life balance is important to think about. Mike Brady reflects on his own learnings and will challenge you how to find your own balance.
Session 6: Mentoring session – It’s all about you!
Brief intro SERVSIG Mentor Program by Andrew Gallan, Florida Atlantic University, USA (5 minutes)
Mentors: will be matched based on topic
If you’re working on research that would benefit from a top service scholar’s input, you’re encouraged to submit a 2-4 page abstract or research summary in advance (*submit by May 15th). You will be matched with someone who works in or near the area you are focused on and you will receive feedback, much like a journal review (only it won’t be blind). You will have an opportunity to speak with your service mentor during the DC and conference.

Doctoral Consortium participants must first register for the Frontiers in Services Conference in order to participate in this event. To register, please clearly indicate on the registration form that you plan to participate in the Doctoral Consortium.
Importantly, if you would like to participate in the breakout sessions at the Consortium, you will have to submit a short summary (2-4 pages) of your research by May 15, 2023 to the following address: sgrobinson@ua.edu.
